After BDS, a postgraduate MDS opens the door to specialist dental practice — orthodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, endodontics and more. Most MDS seats are in private and deemed dental colleges, and a large share of them are management or NRI seats. Here is how those seats are filled.
The rule that never changes
Every MDS seat in India is allotted through official counselling on the basis of NEET-MDS. Management and NRI seats are categories inside that counselling, not a separate route. Anyone offering an MDS seat "outside counselling" is offering something that does not exist. Read red flags of fake consultants.
Who allots MDS seats
- MCC — all-India quota seats in government dental colleges, all seats in deemed universities (including management and NRI) and central institutions.
- State authorities — state quota seats and seats in private dental colleges in that state, including management and NRI categories where provided.
Eligibility
- A BDS degree recognised by the Dental Council of India, with internship completed by the specified date.
- A qualifying NEET-MDS score.
- Registration with the dental council as required.

Choosing a specialty and college
- Specialty first — choose based on your interest, the hand skills you enjoy, and your practice plans.
- Department quality — patient flow, faculty, equipment and the number of cases residents handle.
- Recognition — confirm the MDS seat and intake are recognised by DCI for the current year. Read how to verify a college's approval.
- Total cost — MDS management and NRI fees vary widely; compare the fee for every year plus living costs.
Making the numbers work
Before accepting an expensive seat, estimate how long it will take to recover the cost in the specialty and city you plan to practise in. For some candidates, a different specialty in a lower-fee seat, or another counselling round, is the better decision. Read is management quota worth it?.
