Sometimes the hardest moment in admissions is not getting a seat, but choosing between two. Families often decide on reputation or gut feel. A simple scorecard leads to a better decision.
The scorecard
Score each college from 1 to 5 on each line, and note the evidence behind each score.
- Approval — current-year regulator approval and intake confirmed. Read how to verify approval.
- Total cost — full-course fees, hostel and living costs from official notices. Read how to read a fee notice.
- Exposure — for medicine and dentistry, hospital patient load and clinical postings; for engineering and management, labs, projects and internships.
- Faculty — qualifications, stability and accessibility.
- Outcomes — verified results in licensing exams, PG admissions or placements. Read how to read placement reports.
- Location — distance from home, city costs, safety, language.
- Student life — hostel quality, food, support services, anti-ragging measures.
- Risk — clarity of fees and refund policy, consistency of what you were told.
Weight what matters most
Not every line matters equally. For MBBS, clinical exposure and approval usually outweigh campus facilities. For engineering, outcomes and teaching may matter most. Agree on weights as a family before comparing.

When the scores are close
- Choose the lower total cost if outcomes are comparable.
