MBA and PGDM programmes often look identical from the outside — same subjects, same careers, similar fees. The real difference lies in who awards the qualification and how the curriculum is managed. Here is what matters and what does not.
Who awards what
- MBA — a degree awarded by a university (central, state, private or deemed) or by an institution empowered to award degrees.
- PGDM — a postgraduate diploma awarded by an autonomous institute approved by AICTE.
The IIMs, which once awarded PGDPs, have awarded MBA degrees since the IIM Act came into force.
Curriculum
- University MBAs typically follow a curriculum set or approved by the university, which can be slower to update.
- PGDMs are designed by the institute, which can update them quickly to match industry needs.
Recognition
Both are recognised when the institution has the right approvals. Some PGDMs also have equivalence to an MBA from the Association of Indian Universities, which can matter for higher studies or certain jobs. If you plan a PhD or government roles, check how each qualification is treated.
What actually matters more
- Faculty quality and teaching approach.
- Peer group and alumni network.
- Verified placement outcomes. Read how to read a B-school placement report.
- Total cost versus likely outcomes.
- Specialisations that fit your goals.
A strong PGDM is better than a weak MBA, and vice versa. Compare institutions, not labels.
Admission routes
Both use the same set of exams — CAT, XAT, MAT, CMAT, GMAT and others. Read MBA admission without CAT. Browse MBA colleges and PGDM institutes.
