If you have completed a three-year engineering diploma, you do not have to start BTech from the first year. Lateral entry lets eligible students join directly in the second year, saving a year of time and fees.
Who is eligible
- Holders of a three-year diploma in engineering or technology from a recognised board, with minimum marks as per AICTE and state norms.
- In many cases, BSc graduates with Mathematics as a subject.
- Some states also consider candidates who passed Class 12 with a vocational stream combined with relevant study. Check the current state rules.
Course details are on our Diploma in Engineering and BTech pages.
Seats for lateral entry
AICTE provides for lateral entry seats in BTech programmes, typically over and above the approved first-year intake, plus seats vacant from the first year. The exact provision is set out in AICTE's current approval process handbook and in state rules.
Entrance routes
- State lateral entry tests or counselling — many states conduct a lateral entry engineering test (often called LEET or ECET) or admit on diploma merit.
- Private universities — many admit lateral entry students through their own process.
Branch matching
Your BTech branch must generally correspond to your diploma branch, or a related one as defined by the state or university. Check before applying.
Choosing a college
- Confirm AICTE approval for the BTech programme and intake.
- Check how bridge courses are handled for subjects you did not study in the diploma, especially mathematics.
- Compare placements and labs as you would for any BTech. See our private BTech CSE checklist.
