"University", "deemed university", "autonomous college" and "affiliated college" are used loosely in admissions marketing. Each has a specific legal meaning that affects who awards your degree, how admissions work and how fees are set.

Deemed to be university

An institution declared by the central government, on UGC's advice, to have the status of a university under the UGC Act. Deemed universities award their own degrees. Key implications:

  • They admit students from across India.
  • For MBBS and BDS, all seats are filled through MCC. Read deemed university MBBS through MCC.
  • Fees are set by the institution, under regulatory oversight.

State private university

A university established by an Act of a state legislature and sponsored by a private body. It awards its own degrees. Admission, fee oversight and governance follow the state Act and relevant regulations.

Affiliated college

A college that teaches programmes but whose degrees are awarded by the university it is affiliated to. The university sets the curriculum and conducts exams. Many private professional colleges are affiliated colleges.

Autonomous college

An affiliated college granted academic autonomy, allowing it to design curriculum, conduct exams and declare results, while the degree is still awarded by the parent university.

Why it matters to you

  • Degree — who awards it, and whether it carries the university's name.
  • Admission — central counselling, state counselling or institutional process.
  • Fees — fixed by a state committee or by the institution.
  • Curriculum flexibility — autonomous colleges and universities can update faster.

All of these can be good choices. What matters most is the approval of your specific programme and the quality of teaching. Read how to verify a college's approval.
